The journey from Nelson to Māpua is one of the region's most enjoyable and accessible cycling experiences. Following sections of the Great Taste Trail, the route showcases a mix of coastal landscapes, estuaries, wetlands, vineyards, galleries, cafés and small seaside communities.
Starting in Nelson, riders travel south through a variety of environments, with opportunities to stop for refreshments, admire local artwork, or simply take in the views. The trail is suitable for most fitness levels and offers a relaxed ride with very few challenging climbs.
A highlight of the trip is the crossing to Rabbit Island via the small cycle ferry. Once on the island, cyclists can enjoy quiet trails through coastal forest before continuing towards Māpua. The surrounding estuary attracts a wide range of birdlife, making it an excellent place for nature lovers.
Along the way, there are several points of interest worth exploring. The route passes local galleries, artisan workshops and cafés, while nearby wineries and breweries provide excellent options for a longer stop. The combination of scenery, food and culture is what makes this section of the Great Taste Trail particularly popular.
Route Highlights
1. Nelson Waterfront and Estuary
Begin your ride near Nelson's waterfront and follow the trail towards the Waimea Inlet. The path provides excellent views across the estuary and surrounding wetlands.
2. Rabbit Island Ferry Crossing
A short ferry trip takes cyclists across to Rabbit Island, one of the most memorable parts of the ride.
3. Rabbit Island
Ride through shaded pine forests and along quiet tracks while enjoying glimpses of the coastline and birdlife.
4. Coastal and Rural Landscapes
Leaving Rabbit Island, the trail continues through a mixture of farmland, vineyards and estuarine scenery, with plenty of opportunities for photographs.
5. Arrival in Māpua
The trail finishes in the vibrant village of Māpua, known for its wharf, galleries, cafés, restaurants and boutique shops. It's an ideal place to relax before returning or continuing your adventure.
Bike Hire
Visitors can hire bicycles or e-bikes in Nelson or Richmond and arrange transport if required. Many riders choose to cycle one direction and organise a return shuttle, while others enjoy completing the ride both ways.
